Curator for the Brides on tour* stops in Gorizia (Italia) e Ljubljana (Slovenia), Michele Drascek, in collaboration with the photographer Maja Slavec, produced a work for the slovenian stage of the tour and for the final exhibition that will take place in Byblos Art Gallery, Verona (Italia).

Ho Kryptos tes kardias anthrophos (The hidden man of the heart) [I Pt 1,4] is a sentence that suggests to the women to take care of the hidden being that they bring inside of them. Two brides, two hidden beings.

[*Brides on tour is a unic and one-time trip of two brides thumbing through the Mediterranean area [bridesontour.fotoup.net]. Along the route they will stop to meet artists, associations , local craftswoman, museums and foundations, but also cultural and pacifist association with whom they will make some symbolic acts like the feet washing, the daily dress washing and also an interaction with them job. The purpose is to explore and raise every possible attestation with videos, photos and written diaries]

A well-dressed woman is carrying with her a black box which has inside the sound of the countdown before the explosion of a bomb. She is walking with a resolute gait on the main street of Ljubljana during the rush-hour as a Suicide-bomber. With this action she is looking to provoke the people and attract their attention to this possible terroristic attack.

What happen? The people didn’t react to the provocation and they ignored the risk: they felt totally out of danger and they looked at her as an object of Beauty, not as an object of fret.
Someone on the street said “She got a bomb” and then the other pointed out “She is a bomb!” They recognized in her, in spite of all that, the Beauty and not the danger.

At present Slovenia is the president of EU Parliament. The importance of this political position is high. And for this political position also the possibility of a terroristic attack is growing more marked. But the media are not communicating this possibility to the people. So the people are living this political situation in a comfortable way. They are not touched from this important position. They are feeling safe, like nothing changed.

The media influenced the people with an image that is not the equivalent to the reality.
That means that we are now living in a complete simulated condition, where information tells us nothing about reality. The image of the Beauty remains the more important message of the media, in every field of life.
And the Beauty attract the attention of the people also in the street: it doesn't matter what a woman is carrying in a box, which sound is coming out from the box...she's beautiful! The reflection of the representation of the media works in every level of reality. The danger is not touching the people: it's unreal, it is a NON possibility.

S I T U A K T C I J A

Maja Slavec dedicated one whole year to the artistic project S i t u a k t c i j a. The artist followed the life of some women in them everyday activities, taking part in the simple actions of the day like privileged observer, but not intrusive. So we can see women portrayed in interior spaces of the house like kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms; but also during passing moments from room to room, or external from housing spaces, public spaces. In every case, the woman is alone.

Maja Slavec inquires into the real life and capture the situation (in Slovenian situacija) in which the woman is alone with herself. These are instants of intimate life (akt, naked; also in a broad sense) in which emerge subtly femininity and eroticism. Here, however, is completely absent any intention that leads to think of a voyeuristic look into intimacy. The woman isn’t a potential erotic object for outer observer.

In fact the artist deepens the topic of the self-perception of femininity and eroticism. And she speaks of the fear to loose this self-perception. In her photos, consequently, we can recognize a latent sadness. In this way the photographic memory of S i t u a k t c i j a records also sadness, which has a poetic value.

The artist specifies “There’s a sort of poetry in being sad. Sadness is poetic”. If poetry has a certain inclination for emptiness [Iosif Brodskij], S i t u a k t c i j a describes this inclination tactfully, succeeding in express exactly the poetry, not only the semantic, of the situations.

Just for this inclination to poetry built in the project concept, Maja Slavec photography, although portray real life moments, is not purely realistic like greater part of contemporary situation photography: it meet precise formal and aesthetic fundamental rules (composition, light) maintaining yet the absence of artifice in the representation of reality.

The final result is a photographic series in which there isn’t narrative will.

S i t u a k t c i j a brings in itself the quality of immediacy of the real life.

"IMPACT - ART" /place + relationships

The block was built in 1985, mostly for young families from ex Yugoslavia. The relations between neighbors were alive. Children were playing all-day, parents were visiting each other and happened community events (cleaning initiatives; public flat that was used for meetings and as a Club room in winter for the children, where they could play; e.g.: we made theater events for our parents). In 1991 Slovenia became an Independent State and communities began to change. The changing structure of economy had a big impact on people life style and lots of people lost their jobs. Slovenia was a strong industrial country in former Yugoslavia, but now we are strong in trade economy. This year we are the leading country in European Union: a story of success for a young country. My goal is to see how these positive changes reflect in everyday life in our neighborhood.

We live under the same roof and we became complete strangers: there are almost no relations between the neighbors. We have cameras in the public hall, locks on the public entrance and even on the single floors. The benches were removed so that the people wouldn’t gather in front of the block and disturb the others. The playgrounds are empty. Now we have marble walls in the public hall and mirrors in the elevators, something impossible before because of the vandalism caused by adolescent boys.

So, I decided to create a connection with my neighbors, and try to see how they live at home. I send them a letter in which I announced my visit in a week or two. I started to work the 8^th February 2008, during a national cultural holiday.

I rang on their doors and I asked them if they would let me in for few minutes to take photos of them. In this way I had the opportunity to reconnect the relations between us. We have 14 floors, 139 apartments in which are living 357. I achieve my goal in 30 apartments for a total of 55 people. In my visits I made new friendships and recover some old ones with friends of my childhood. Almost with everyone we had feelings of nostalgia for the old times. On the other hand, a lot of people didn’t even want to open the door: they just shammed as they weren’t at home.
To conclude, the new style of life reduced the relations. Now we are much more addicted to television, shopping and computers. Among my visits just one lady said that she loves to read books. The music was usually played from the radio or not even played. The television is watched in almost every apartment, even during lunch time. A lot of young people were in front of their computers playing games or surfing on the Internet. Some spoke with me, but they didn’t want to be photographed. I noticed only one flat with art works and I managed to take a picture of a new arrival – a painting of France Slana - that came in the collection of the owner just when I was there.

After I have finished the invasion of privacy, I prepared an exhibition of the photographs in a public hall. The purpose was to motivate the neighbors to confront each other and to see if they could connect, if the relations between them could change because they all were part of a project. And to find out what kind of reaction could I get as a photographer. The reactions were positive. Someone said that I gave them a theme to talk about.

Now when I meet them in the elevator or in a hall we have a chat and they are interested in my work. Part of my purpose was to bring an experience of contemporary art to their home, show them that they can be a part of it and encourage the interest for art events in general.

The result of the final work is a collage, where I poetically connected the materials that I developed during my project. The final composition is a symbolic platform. In the background there is a picture of a block, while in front there is a mosaic of shots of my neighbors at home. The composition emphasizes the inner life of a standing still building. It represents the opposition between the fragile lives that are constantly changing and the power of the history and infinity.

REVALUATION

Performance in public place

The movement of a dancer has the intention to create circles in a space. The circles represent the public system (political, cultural, economical, etc.) that has an impact on our life, with or without our approval.

The “tondo” is a micro system of intimate space, a system that exists among others. I see the intimate and the public structures as closed systems in which we could fit in or not. The movement of the dancer creates a intimate story that is trying to fit in a public structure, but the figure is constantly breaking the perfect shape and creating his/her own ones. The figure represents the autonomy of a living being, with the frustrations that he/she develops in the process of growth.

The main shape – the circle - can be seen as an ocular or as a general shape of life path, that I understand as a repetition in general. As Artists, I think that we have the same path to follow, but we have a larger autonomy than the others. We constantly revaluate the system, we tighten its borders and we account for our actions under the autonomy of Art.

The interconnection between the space of the dancer and the people involved by chance in the performance represent the relations tied in our society, inside the system. In the end: Are these relations under our control? Or, since they are tied in the system, is the system itself that control our relations? Who is the winner? The individual or the system? Is it ours the path in which we choose to walk? Or is controlled by the system of our political, economical or cultural structures? Are we really free in our decisions?

The second part of the video goes backwards: it is the revaluation of a life that ended. What could we do better? Do we accept the past or we are sorry for the things we did? After all, is the power of being still so strong to arrive to our life end with a smile? What means to be significant? And to whom? Did our life as artists have an impact in the society?

Underwear

When I thought about the word “underwear” the first association that came to my mind was with the color white.
Why?
Because in old times it was usually white.

From the hygienic perspective, the white cotton underwear can be wash at 95° C and so it is clinical clean.
I was wondering what kind of underwear women wear nowadays in the everyday life. Do they choose to wear it because of the color, mood, sex appeal, health…? I took portraits of women of different ages, to see the difference between young and older. I chose eight portraits to represent this project.

Interesting point of view:

- Influence of the media, fashion, MTV, magazines.
- Are they sexually active?
- Are they caring for their health?
- Personality.
- Stage of life (still a girl, in a relationship or not, mother, grandmother)

The purpose of the photographic series is to have a different perception of those invisible everyday moments which are not seen in our routine lifetime. The central figure is taking her place in a situation hidden to a possible outer viewer, who could see it in a conventional man perspective (the typical Peeping Tom spying a sensual, erotic or sexual hidden scene). This figure is a woman having a normal behavior during the real moments of her life-drama. With situAKTcija I show to the public the hidden nature of these lifetime moments.

Creative 50
2007

Invited to make a project for 50th European Community anniversary, I realized 50 portraits photography and illustrations in collaboration with the designer Renata Šifrar. We wanted to create a creative connection with the people, so we chose 50 people, one person for every single year of life (from one to fifty years old). We took portraits of them and, moreover, we asked them to draw self-portraits. The project was exhibited in the House of European Union in Slovenia.

The shopping centre Gallerija Gosposka (“Gosposka” means “high society”) used for the opening the idea of Cow Parade – www.cowparade.com - but utilizing dummies instead. They invited Slovenian artists and citizens to participate. The project didn’t have any art curator and the organization gave to every participant 100 € for the realization expenses. They said that this opportunity could be a good reference for the artists, because of the exposition to the media. But I didn’t agree. And so I decided to take two dummies - man and woman, black and white - and used them for a video project. Finished the video, I finally sent back the dummies, with a message for the missing curator written on them. On the black dummy was written the explanation of word KITSCH and on the white one a definition of ART, quoting the Slovenian theorist of art Milan Butina.

CONCEPT
The circle is a symbol of the cyclic and the repetitive. The inner circle represents the subconscious and the wishes. The outer circle represents the reality.

BARBIE
Since many decades, Barbie is a common and universal toy for girls. For me, it is a typical shown-like-innocent tool with the latent aim to educate a potential future consumer of products connected with the beauty standards. The today girl playing with Barbie will be the tomorrow ideal buyer of the cosmetic and fashion industry. So, the Barbie in the inner circle displays the subconscious wish of every woman. This subconscious effects and worsens the women dissatisfaction with the reality and put her complexes in an increasing process.

REAL WOMEN BODIES
In the outer circle are placed the real bodies of the women. They stand on tiptoe, in the usual posture of the Barbie.

CHILDREN'S HEADS
The heads of the child on the women bodies symbolized the enigma.

The little girls are not aware of the problems connected with the beauty, because the experiences - at that stage of life – are not in conflict with their external appearance. But when they get to the puberty, there is a switch and their bodies undergo an obvious change. I show my own experience: during the adolescence, the changes of my body were expected as the typical images that the media reinforce, but the opposite happen. This is to say that from the moment in which I am aware of my deviation from the normative image of the beauty, I become mature and prepared for my self control. Anyway, at the same time, I become a part of a consumer chain.

SET UP
The purpose of the circle is to rotate in the space. It is controlled by the observer, but the final landing of the object is unpredictable. With turning this circle the active visitors put the shapes - women bodies and Barbie - into life. This allows a contact between the inner and the outer shapes.

The fast movement leads to the possible connection between the ideal shape of Barbie and one of the different shapes of the women. This to say that all the women are carrying a fragment of a Barbie inside, but the future is unpredictable. The rotating circle it is like a circle-of-luck. Turn it and wait till it stops. When it stops, the woman that you will be is reveal: one body, one shape. But it is a real one, not an ideal one.

TERROR / 2006 Slovinian National Theatre Maribor

After a successful cooperation with the dance Theatre Plesna Izba Maribor, I was again invited to prepare a concept that was planned to be tuned with the dance performance TERROR of the choreographer Marko Urbanek. I created the performance introduction that took place when the audience was escorted in the dance hall. The show was about the state of consciousness and the influence of a traumatic experience from the past. The dancers are represented in portraits and each one expresses seven abnormal personalities or the seven sins.

GIBALKA
(eng.: The Mover) / 2005

This is my degree work for the Department of Fine Arts of the Faculty of Education, entitled “Photography on canvas and other materials”. I tested and analyzed an old, pioneer technique of developing photography combined with painting. The repeating element in the works is the woman body: as symbol of maternity, since she could carry in herself the fetus, or as a mother in search of her own identity. I built different compositions with the woman body and I put them in an illusory space. These works illustrate the time of birth and the growth, the life conditions and the whishes.

BESEDE (eng.: Words) 2005

This project was realized in 2005 in collaboration with the dancing theatre Plesna Izba Maribor and presented in Maribor National Theatre as a premiere performance of the dance show “Besede” (“Words”).

Quietly, but at the same time getting the attention of the public, the dancers moved the performance from the stage to the exhibition space, till they stood like in a composition, as silent objects.

This real composition connected the public to the view of the photography exhibited on the wall.

During the photographic session I ask to the dancers to perform with white balls in the mouth (representing the physical impossibility to speak). I shot different compositions of the performing bodies which express the unspoken communication.

RED ROOM DARK ROOM / 2004

I’d like to expose this photographic exhibition, which was presented in Media Nox Gallery, Maribor (22.12.2005).

The gallery basement was transformed into a darkroom and the visitors had the experience of a photographer developing his index print, all fulfilled of nude photos.

The visitors didn’t have a direct confrontation with the exhibition in illuminate surroundings, but they had an active role, since they had to turn on a mini red light and with this light up the fragments of the index prints. This gave to them the vibrant feeling of spying the intimacy exposed in the hundreds fragments exhibited. It was an experience close to spy on through a peephole.

Milk is the first drink that we taste. The mother connection with her child goes, first of all, through the breastfeeding.

They say that we have the strongest connection with the spiritual world as babies and we are loosing this connection through the process of growing.

A man is taking a bath in the milk: it is a sort of ablution into the idol [malik] of his first stage of life, done to return to the pure state of a new-born human being.

The first time I introduced myself as a young artist to the public was in 2001, when I had my first exhibition. “Akt” is a black and white series of men and women nude portraits, in analog technique. With this series I discovered the possibility that the media “photography” and the concrete fact of carrying a photo-camera can give me to explore the intimacy of the people. A performance and a poems reading happened contemporaneously with the opening of the exhibition.
